Presentation: Chapter 3,9, &10 Blog Experience

Group 1 Chapter 3

I enjoyed listening to the Intercultural Communication segment as it spoke about things I can relate to. I
found the topic of different cultures, their beliefs, communication, traditions, religion, what they wear
and what they eat very interesting as they can stand out when they are surrounded by a different
culture.

Another interesting point in group 1’s presentation was foods that are considered norm by cultures, as I
was shocked to learn that Vietnamese eat dogs and Japanese are allowed to slurp their soup as I
couldn’t imagine eating what I have been raised to treat as a family pet. Nor would my mother allow me
to slurp my soup, whether we are here or on vacation in Japan. It helped me understand that what is
normal for my culture may not be seen the same by other cultures and vice versa.

The example that was made in regards to opening gifts on Christmas eve instead of Christmas day for
the Spanish culture is something I grew up with and can relate to. Over the years my family has adapted
to opening up only a few gifts on Christmas eve and the rest on Christmas morning during family
breakfast. So I guess we are currently going through some culture change in my household.

I myself have difficulty with my culture as I come from a Hispanic family but don’t speak a word of
Spanish. Therefore, communication with my grandparents can be challenging at times. Although, we’ve
each learned key word which helps us better understand the point we are trying to get across and it
definitely includes a lot of hand gestures, I believe that’s a latin thing too.

Group 2 Chapter 9

Group 2’s presentation, “communicating in groups” was also very informative as the details of different
types of groups was clearly explained. They did a great job putting the slides together and I like how my team leader presented the intro video which showed families from popular tv shows, anime, and live action movies that represented healthy groups working together and understanding each other.

My team mates also followed through with great slides which focused on interest groups, support
groups, and provided information on the best size for effective work group teams. Another interesting
point was the topic and slides which spoke about the pros and cons of virtual groups which has become
a more common way of communication since the Covid pandemic. While it’s easier to get everyone
together virtually for a meeting, this type of group meeting has its challenges in building positive
relationships when compared to face to face group meetings.

While the Protective consensual slide had me realize that I live in protective household so I will soon
focus on changing that to a consensual household so I can hold more discussions and possibly steer
some decisions my way.

At the end of the day, I enjoyed working with my group and preparing for my contribution to the team. I believe we worked very good together and everyone did a great job presenting and explaining the vast
amount of groups and how they work. Most importantly we learned that communication, patience and
respect are the ingredients for a healthy and successful group.

Group 3 Chapter 10

Group 3 focused on leadership and problem-solving and they did a great job explaining the importance
of leadership whether its formal, informal or shared roles on being a leader. They also spoke about the
types of deliverables which explains the differences and definitions of external, final, tangible, intangible and process deliverables.

Another slide of interest was the presentation showing written formats such as written brief,
comprehensive report, and executive summary. But it’s not only format as there's also oral format and
virtual format as well. Personally, I prefer oral presentations as I can express myself clearer and maintain interaction versus writing a presentation.

Most importantly, they elaborated on the 5 Key shared leadership responsibilities such as being
committed to your group goals, keeping discussions on track, the need to complete individual
assignments, get input from all members, and being able to manage conflict among members. While
transparency is an essential quality that must be provided in all conversations as active Listening creates
an inclusive and encouraging environment.

Group 3 truly broke down the importance of leadership roles and their effects on a group. What we
learned is that leadership comes with great responsibility and a good leader needs to be great at
problem solving, managing conflict, committing time to the group and encouraging members in order to build and maintain better teams.

In all this has been a great experience for me as I like working more in groups than individually because
it allows me to share ideas with my peers and receive feedback which helps me further improve my
skills and become a more efficient team member while making friends and building trust along the way.
I believe this course helps us tackle any public speaking fears whether individually or as team members
and reinforces us to become better speakers and presenters with time.
